About Us

Although we are one the smallest amateur drama groups in Scotland with a membership of around a dozen, we remain very active.  We currently stage two productions per year; an entry into our local one act festival in February and a one week production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.  Our Fringe production is often performed again by request at other venues.

Our modest numbers allow us to carefully tailor our choice of play.  It also means that few Mercators ever get the chance to "rest"!  And very few clubs of our size can boast three published playwrights in their ranks.

Our regular meeting night is Monday, with one extra weeknight at later stages of a production.  Rehearsals are held in club members' houses.  While this can restrict the type of play we can stage, it does provide a more relaxing and comfortable rehearsal, especially on a cold Scottish winter night!

The Mercators have a long and proud tradition of supporting Scotland's national amateur drama organisation, the Scottish Community Drama Association (SCDA), not only by regularly competing in their annual drama festival with some success (trophies won at many festivals and, most notably, our first appearance at the National Finals in 2004), but by providing many of the office-bearers. Currently, the Chairman and the Secretary of Edinburgh District SCDA, the Secretary of Eastern Division SCDA and the Eastern Divisional Librarian are all Mercators.
